The Best Biothane Dog Leashes and Long Lines

Waterproof, odour-proof, and rated to 1,000 lb — with one flaw that every seller leaves out.

By Stephen V.Published July 14, 2026

If you do recall work in wet ground, biothane is the correct material and it is not close. A nylon long line drags through a bog and comes back weighing three pounds. A biothane one comes back looking like it did when you bought it, and you wipe it with a cloth.

Buy the Gummy K9 textured lineif you want the version that fixes biothane’s one real flaw, or the Viper tracking lead if you want the standard smooth finish at a lower price.

What biothane actually is

It is not a mystery material and it is not magic. Per the manufacturer, BioThane is “basically a polyester webbing with a TPU or PVC coating” — a woven core in a welded plastic jacket.

And here is the line that every product listing omits, direct from BioThane: “The tensile strength comes from the polyester webbing inside.” The coating adds waterproofing, cleanability and odour resistance. It adds no strength at all. If a seller implies the coating is what makes it strong, they do not understand their own product.

The real numbers

BioThane publishes proper specs for its Beta 520 PET material — the grade used for animal gear:

  • Standard profile (B10), 1/2–1 in: 1,000 lb break strength
  • Super Heavy profile (B10), 1/2–1 in: also 1,000 lb break strength
  • Adjustable profile (B07), 3/4–1 in: 500 lb break strength
  • Buckle pull strength: 200 lb

Two things fall out of that table that no review mentions. First, the Super Heavy grade is not stronger than the Standard — both break at 1,000 lb. Super Heavy is about 50% thicker, so it is stiffer and has more body, but it is not stronger in tension. If you are paying extra for Super Heavy expecting more strength, you are paying for stiffness.

Second, and more importantly: the buckle is rated to 200 lbagainst a strap rated to 1,000. The hardware is one fifth as strong as the material. Every “1,000 lb biothane leash” on the market is really a 200 lb leash wearing a 1,000 lb strap, unless the seller has upgraded the hardware and told you so — and almost none of them do.

The picks, ranked

1. Viper BioThane Tracking Lead / Long Line

Durability score 72/100

Best for: Long-line work in mud, water and snow

Viper BioThane Tracking Lead / Long Line

The correct material for wet, filthy long-line work, with one honest caveat: it is slick, and the clip is always the weak point.

Material
Coated webbing: polyester core, TPU or PVC coating
Core break strength
BioThane Beta 520 PET, 1 in standard profile: 1,000 lb (material maker's figure)
Buckle pull strength
200 lb on the same material spec
Cleaning
Soap and water; stays flexible in cold
Materials9/10
Hardware6/10
Construction8/10
Failure mode7/10
Warranty5/10

Pros

  • A long line that does not soak up water, hold mud, or freeze stiff — the single biggest practical advantage over biothane's alternatives
  • Wipes clean instead of going into the wash
  • Does not develop the smell that a wet nylon long line always develops

Cons

  • The strength is in the polyester core; the coating contributes none — do not pay for the coating expecting strength
  • Slick when wet, and it will burn your hands faster than webbing if a big dog bolts. Wear gloves on a long line
  • Viper does not publish its own hardware rating

How we assessed it: on published materials, hardware specs and construction — not long-term chew-tested. We say so because it is true, and because a claim we cannot back is worth nothing to you.

2. Jim Hodges Dog Training Gummy K9 BioThane Long Line

Durability score 69/100

Best for: A grippier biothane long line

Jim Hodges Dog Training Gummy K9 BioThane Long Line

Biothane with the slipperiness engineered out of it — the best-handling long line here, if you accept the unpublished specs.

Material
Coated webbing (BioThane-type), textured 'gummy' finish
Core break strength
Governed by the polyester core; Viper-grade Beta 520 PET publishes 1,000 lb
Hardware rating
Not published
Materials8/10
Hardware6/10
Construction8/10
Failure mode7/10
Warranty5/10

Pros

  • The textured finish addresses biothane's real weakness — it is far less slippery in a wet hand
  • Made by a working-dog trainer for long-line work

Cons

  • No manufacturer-published break strength or hardware rating
  • The tacky surface picks up grit more than a smooth coating

How we assessed it: on published materials, hardware specs and construction — not long-term chew-tested. We say so because it is true, and because a claim we cannot back is worth nothing to you.

3. Viper BioThane K9 Working Lead

Durability score 72/100

Best for: A shorter waterproof working lead

Viper BioThane K9 Working Lead

A solid waterproof working lead; the material is proven, the clip is an unknown.

Material
Coated webbing: polyester core, TPU or PVC coating
Core break strength
Beta 520 PET standard profile: 1,000 lb (material spec)
Hardware rating
Not published by Viper
Materials9/10
Hardware6/10
Construction8/10
Failure mode7/10
Warranty5/10

Pros

  • Same waterproof, odour-free material in a working-length lead
  • Easy to disinfect — BioThane specifies a 10% bleach solution

Cons

  • Hardware rating unpublished, and hardware is where these fail
  • Slick in the hand when wet

How we assessed it: on published materials, hardware specs and construction — not long-term chew-tested. We say so because it is true, and because a claim we cannot back is worth nothing to you.

4. Mighty Paw Chew-Proof Cable Leash

Durability score 82/100

Best for: A dog that chews through leashes

Mighty Paw Chew-Proof Cable Leash

The right answer for a leash-chewer, and the only one here with a rated clip — just note the irony that the chew-proof leash's warranty excludes chewing.

Cable
2.34 mm stainless steel braided wire — five bundles of seven wires
Clip
Aviation aluminum carabiner, holds over 850 lb of pull force
Length
6 ft
Cable break strength
Not published
Materials9/10
Hardware9/10
Construction8/10
Failure mode8/10
Warranty6/10

Pros

  • A steel cable is the only leash construction a determined chewer cannot simply bite through
  • The carabiner is rated — over 850 lb of pull force — which is more than most leash brands will state
  • The 2.34 mm braided construction is specified down to the wire count

Cons

  • Mighty Paw publishes the carabiner rating but not the cable's own break strength
  • A steel cable will mark your hands and your car's paint; it does not drape like webbing
  • Mighty Paw's lifetime warranty excludes excessive chewing — on a leash sold to chewers

How we assessed it: on published materials, hardware specs and construction — not long-term chew-tested. We say so because it is true, and because a claim we cannot back is worth nothing to you.

The flaw nobody warns you about

Biothane is slick. That is the direct consequence of the thing that makes it good: a smooth, sealed, non-absorbent coating that mud and water cannot grip. Your hands cannot grip it either.

On a 30 ft long line with a big dog at the end of it, a smooth biothane line will run through a bare hand and take skin with it. This is the single most common complaint from people who buy one, and it is almost never mentioned in a roundup.

Two real fixes:

  • Wear gloves. Anyone doing serious long-line work already does.
  • Buy a textured line. The “gummy” or tacky-finish biothane is specifically engineered to solve this, and it works.

Care, which is the easy part

Soap and warm water. BioThane specifically notes you can disinfect it with a 10% bleach solution, and that the material stays flexible in cold weather — which nylon does not; a wet nylon line freezes into a stick.

This is the whole reason working and hunting owners use it. It does not absorb water, it does not hold smell, it does not freeze, and it cleans in thirty seconds.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is biothane?

BioThane publishes a 1,000 lb break strength for its Beta 520 PET material in the standard 1 in profile, and 500 lb for the thinner adjustable profile. But the same spec sheet rates buckle pull strength at 200 lb — so the hardware, not the strap, sets the real limit of any finished leash.

Is Super Heavy biothane stronger than standard?

No. BioThane's own spec sheet gives both the Standard and the Super Heavy profiles a 1,000 lb break strength. Super Heavy is roughly 50% thicker, which makes it stiffer and gives it more body, but it does not break at a higher load. If you are paying more for Super Heavy expecting extra strength, you are paying for stiffness.

What is the downside of a biothane leash?

It is slick. The same sealed, non-absorbent coating that stops mud and water gripping it also stops your hands gripping it. On a long line with a strong dog, a smooth biothane line can run through a bare hand and burn it. Wear gloves, or buy a textured 'gummy' finish line, which is engineered specifically to fix this.

Does biothane smell?

No. BioThane's own FAQ says plainly that the material is stinkproof. Because the polyester core is sealed inside a TPU or PVC coating, there is nothing absorbent for water, mud or odour to get into. This is the main practical reason working-dog owners choose it over nylon.

Is biothane the same as leather?

No, though it is often sold as a leather substitute because it looks similar. Biothane is polyester webbing with a plastic coating; leather is a natural hide. Biothane is waterproof and needs no conditioning; leather needs care and hates repeated soaking but ages better. We compare them directly in our biothane vs leather guide.
